GUEST CONDUCTOR AND LEADER

THE IW Symphony Orchestra will be taking to the stage at Medina Theatre next Saturday, May 24, for the penultimate concert in the current season.
Joining the orchestra, as guest conductor, is Michael Veazey. Michael studied conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, and is currently musical director of the Godalming Choral Society.
Making a return to the orchestra as guest leader is violinist John Crawford.
The first of the two works making up the concert is Stravinsky’s Firebird Ballet Suite. The ballet was commissioned by the impresario Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes and was first performed in Paris in 1910.
Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, perhaps better known as The Pathetique, provides the conclusion to the evening’s music. The composer regarded the work as “quite the best — and especially the most sincere — of all my works”.
The concert begins at 7.15pm. Tickets are available on the door or in advance from the Medina Theatre box office.
