Letters to the Editor
NET A TIDY SUM BY PICKING UP LITTER
Friday, May 9, 2008
From Prof Dennis Russell, chairman, Campaign to Protect Rural England (IW), Dormy, Whitwell Road, Ventnor:
YOUR article on litter at Brading Marsh (CP, 02-05-08) was a timely reminder that our Island is not immune from the scourge of litter and fly-tipping, a fact which we already know from the public-spirited community groups who organise litter-picks along our coastline and the shores of the Medina.
The national president of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), Bill Bryson, launched a campaign last month to tidy up Britain. As he says, litter breeds more litter. Clean environments tend to stay clean; dirty ones always get dirtier. Litter is depressing for residents, bad for business and bad for tourism.
We in the Island branch of CPRE are making a start by putting our money where our mouth is, using income from a legacy left to us by the late Dorothy Frazer, of Mottistone, who believed all her life in celebrating the Island’s natural beauty.
Readers will find an advertisement in this issue encouraging community groups or youth organisations such as scouts and guides, to embark on their own litter-picking to help tidy up our Island.
On receipt of details of your efforts, plus a photograph, we will donate several cheques of £100 either to your own organisation or to your favourite charity.
We regard this as an initial effort, and hope to join up with other like-minded groups such as the Women’s Institute (and the IW Council) to keep up the momentum.
• The Spar Letter of the Week is chosen by the editor from the letters submitted to the County Press for publication. The decision solely lies with the editor.
