PROPERTY OF THE WEEK
ALMOST every shade of green can be seen from the windows of a spacious Shanklin home, which has been completely refurbished and oozes quality.
Contributing to the leafy outlook from The Lodge are a mighty sequoia, an ancient yew tree and a magnificent oak within the property’s beautiful gardens.
Step inside this immaculate detached property, set in Popham Road, on the edge of the delightful Old Village and offering just over 4,000 sq ft of space and you will find much more to please the eye.
The owners have upgraded it from top to toe, decorating the well-proportioned rooms in an elegant fashion with gold, jade and duck egg blue predominating.
Only the best has been installed, from a new gas-fired central heating system and super-efficient insulation to a classy, ivory-coloured fitted kitchen and solid wooden worktops in the kitchen and utility room.
Other examples include a large shower unit with power jets in the en-suite to the master bedroom, a surround-sound system to the principal ground floor rooms and attractive new oak internal doors throughout.
The end result is befitting of the prestigious house, which was built to a high standard in 1971 and planned with a pleasing layout by well-known local architect Robert Biggs.
These were benefits that prompted the owners to buy The Lodge two years ago. They also liked the secluded gardens attracting red squirrels and a wide variety of birds, plus the location, with the town, Big Mead and centre of the Old Village a short walk away.
In keeping with the Arts and Crafts look, the house had windows with long panes installed at the front.
While fine specimen trees in the garden and nearby are a legacy from the time the area was part of the Popham White estate, the owners have carried out lots of planting to create interest and colour.
Now bluebells, as well as magnolia and camelia, are in bloom in three neat beds in the front garden.
Also at the front is a gravelled in-and-out driveway, providing parking and access to a large attached double garage with two up-and-over doors, one of them automatic.
Space and airiness is evident right from the start, since the entrance hall is an impressive 15ft by 13ft, with natural light coming in through two large front windows on either side of the front door.
Stairs with a large cupboard beneath lead from here to the first floor and immaculate jade-coloured carpeting continues on into most rooms.
Double doors open to the stylish 19ft by 17ft drawing room, with a feature fireplace as focal point and windows looking over the front garden and beautiful side garden.
Across the hall is the good-sized sitting room, with a pleasant front garden outlook and an adjoining front-facing study.
The dining room is an elegant setting for formal entertaining, where a lowered central section of ceiling with recessed spotlights creates a sense of intimacy. Wainscotting to dado level, two windows to the leafy rear garden and patio doors to the lovely lawned side garden are other features of this generous, 25ft by 9ft, room.
Attractive to look at and excellent to work in, the rear-aspect kitchen is well equipped and fitted out with an extensive range of stylish units, solid beech work surfaces and matching Stoves stainless-steel double fan oven with separate grill, plus a further stainless-steel oven and grill, a combination microwave and gas hob with extractor hood.
It also comes with an integral fridge and dishwasher and an American-style fridge/freezer.
Ceramic floor tiles continue from the kitchen to the next-door utility room, with the same ivory units, an integral washing machine, rear window and side door to a sheltered, paved sitting area.
Also downstairs is a WC with modern white suite.
The master bedroom upstairs measures 19ft by 17ft and has a large front window, a side window looking out to the garden and trees beyond and access to a large front balcony and sun terrace.
In addition to its luxuriously-appointed en-suite shower room, it has a dressing room fitted out with bespoke clothes rails and shelving.
The owners have built in plenty of storage to The Lodge, including double wardrobes in spacious bedrooms two and three and cupboards on the second-floor galleried landing.
Serving first-floor bedrooms two and three is a bathroom with a modern white suite.
Also on the first floor is a 9ft by 7ft boiler/storage room.
The second floor houses a bedroom with a Velux window and a further bathroom with a white suite.
There are several appealing sitting areas in the secluded tree and shrub-lined gardens at each side and to the rear of the house. At one side is a paved patio close to the towering sequoia and a further gravelled area.
Lawn can be found at the rear and to the other side, where a circular gravelled seating area is a delightful spot to sit and admire shrubs and trees, including a yew and a eucalyptus.
