BLAZE WRECKS VILLAGE PUB

By County Press Reporter - Monday, May 1, 2006

WHITWELL'S historic thatched White Horse Inn was destroyed by fire last night (Sunday).
It is thought the fire started in a chimney and quickly spread to the thatch.
Around 50 firefighters battled for four hours to get the blaze under control.
Although the roof was destroyed, crews managed to prevent the flames spreading to most of the property.
The first-floor accommodation was heavily smoke-logged and the ground floor waterlogged, however.
Building inspectors this morning (Monday) declared the premises structurally safe.
No-one was injured.
