EXTRA-SPECIAL WEDDING
Nathan and Lisa Medway with their wedding certificate following their marriage in Sandown. Friends rallied round to make Lisa's big day extra special after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
IT IS said in times of trouble, you find out who your friends are — and newlywed Lisa Medway has been deeply touched by the heartwarming actions of those around her.
On being given the devastating diagnosis she had pancreatic cancer, the 39-year-old’s world caved in.
But her long-term partner, Nathan, simply said: “Are you going to marry me now then?”
And so set in motion a whirlwind six weeks that saw friends and neighbours rally round to organise a memorable wedding day, providing the couple with a venue, catering, decorations, entertainment, a car, flowers and much more.
On Saturday, the pair wed at home in Park Mews, Sandown, before heading to the Westhill Hotel, in Leed Street, for the reception.
With them were Lisa’s children, Liam, 14, and Emma, 12, and the couple’s daughter, Natasha, four, who all had a role to play as bridesmaids and best man.
Lisa, who worked at Windmills Pre-school in Bembridge, said: “It was the best day of my life. I could not stop crying with happiness, as the words of the vows meant so much more.
“The day was amazing. I could not believe how everything gelled together and it would not have been possible without the help and support we had.
“Everything was donated. It has not cost us a penny. The only thing I asked for was strawberries and cream as a dessert.
“It was a dream come true and I just cannot thank everyone enough for their kindness.”
Lisa and Nathan thanked their neighbour, Tracy Manley, friend Sharon Batchelor and Katy Power, owner of the Westhill Hotel, for organising the day.
For providing services they thanked DJ Paul Watford, Brian ‘The Bronc’ Lane, That’s Service Party Shop, All Seasons Florist, Busy Bee, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, where Nathan works as a bakery supervisor.
