Isle of Wight: Boy, 14 in safari tragedy

Bembridge club boy, 14, dies in safari crash

By County Press Reporter - Saturday, August 23, 2008
BEMBRIDGE Sailing Club has been left reeling after 14-year-old member Marcus Egerton-Warburton was killed in a minibus crash during a safari holiday in South Africa, along with three other family members.
Eton pupil Marcus died along with his grandmother, Brenda Bonham Carter, aunt Kay Bonham Carter and step-grandfather, Francis Kirkwood.
Marcus's mother, Fiona Bonham Carter - a cousin of Hollywood actress Helena Bonham Carter - survived the accident and is reported to have managed to crawl from the wreckage. His older brother, Piers, 16, was also involved in the accident and was taken to hospital in Johannesburg for treatment with their mother.
Fiona's brother, Graham Bonham Carter, was also on the minibus.
The accident is said to have happened on Wednesday, when a tyre burst as the minibus was travelling between game reserves.
Marcus's father, Charlie Egerton Warburton, who is captain of Bembridge Sailing Club, was said to be flying out to South Africa to meet the survivors.
The tragedy was announced on the club's website "with the very greatest sadness".
