HOW TO AVOID COWBOYS

By Jon Moreno - Friday, May 2, 2008
A SCHEME to help consumers avoid rip-off merchants and cowboys has signed up its 200th member.
The IW Council trading standards department launched its Buy With Confidence initiative three years ago to ensure Island businesses traded fairly, were trustworthy and kept to the spirit and letter of the law.
All 200 members of the scheme have passed stringent checks made by trading standards officers, with a list of members available to the public so they can find reputable businesses.
Trading standards celebrated the landmark by presenting its 200th member, Shanklin-based C&J Ground Maintenance, with a membership certificate and special cake at Newport’s Quay Arts on Thursday last month. The cake was created by Alison McCallum, of Centrepiece Cake Designs, a long-standing member of Buy With Confidence.
Twenty other new members to the initiative were welcomed, which included a dog groomer, a jeweller, an electrician and a security firm, which were also presented membership certificates.
Geoff Smith, of the Bike Shed, one of the scheme’s founder members, and Mrs McCallum were guest speakers, explaining how being members of the scheme benefitted them.
