TURNING WASTE INTO MUTUAL BENEFIT

By Lori Little - Friday, May 2, 2008
BUSINESSES got together to go green at a workshop in Cowes — and managed to turn waste from some companies into raw materials for others.
Forty businesses brushed up on environmental best practice and learned about plans for a new ‘green’ website and found considerable success during a waste exchange session.
Delegates listed their waste output, which was matched with others wanting raw materials. For example, Amazon World wanted sawdust, which one of the marine companies had in excess.
Meanwhile Native and Traditional were looking for additional copse land and Island Waste had some wooded areas that require copsing.
It was all part of the reduce, re-use and recycle theme at the Quick Win Workshop, which was staged by a partnership of the IW Council, IW Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry, National Industrial Symbiosis Partnership and The Olive Consultancy.
The chamber announced it would be commissioning a new green website for the Island in partnership with the council, to be operational by the summer to provide advice and information on domestic and commercial waste. It can also be used by schools.
Plans were also set out for a commercial waste recovery facility at Arreton, using a barge at the River Medina to transfer recycled waste to the mainland.
Two more events are planned, in Newport and the East Wight.
Island businesses wanting more information should send an e-mail to barry.groves@iwchamber.co.uk.
