Saturday, August 30, 2008
POLICE have appealed for witnesses after a collision involving a cyclist in Ashey Road, Ryde.
Officers were called to a traffic pinch point in Ashey Road near the junction with Rosemary Lane at 5.49pm on Friday. A 40-year-old cyclist from Brading avoided the Ford Transit van, mounted the kerb, came off his bicycle, and collided with a wall.
He was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where he is being treated for injuries, which are not life threatening.
Part of Ashey Road was closed for more than three hours while police investigated.
A 26-year-old man from Ryde, who was driving the Ford Transit van, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm without intent. He was released on bail until December 20 pending further enquiries. PC Clive Richardson from the Shanklin Roads Policing Unit said:
“Officers understand a number of potential witnesses left the scene of the collision before police arrived.
“I’m appealing for any motorists or pedestrians who were in the area of Ashey Road and Rosemary Lane in Ryde at approximately 5.45pm on Friday to contact police as they may have information that is vital to our investigation.”
Anyone with information, or who saw what happened, is asked to contact Shanklin Roads Policing Unit on 0845 045 45 45, or the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
