DRIVER DIED AFTER ATTENDING FUNERAL

By County Press Reporter - Friday, March 28, 2008
A PENSIONER who died five days after being involved in a car accident near Whippingham, had lost consciousness at the wheel of his car shortly after attending a funeral, an inquest was told.
An inquest into the death of Christopher McArthur, 83, of Prospect Road, Shanklin, was concluded as death by natural causes by Island coroner John Matthews on Friday.
Mr McArthur was the driver of a turquoise Volkswagen Golf which collided with a bollard on the A3054 road between Lushington Hill and Park Road on Wednesday, March 19.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, suffering serious injuries, but died in hospital on Monday.
A clinical decision was made by doctors that Mr McArthur died of heart disease. He had been treated for heart disease since suffering a heart attack in 2004, the inquest heard.
Mr McArthur had the car accident just after he attended a funeral for a friend at the IW Crematorium.
His head was slumped on his chest at the wheel just before the collision, said an eyewitness.
Mr McArthur had not suffered injuries in the accident and no other vehicles were involved, said Mr Matthews.
Mr McArthur, born in County Clare, Ireland, was a stalwart member of Shanklin Bowls and Conservative clubs.
