FIREFIGHTERS AIM FOR TOWER OF CASH
By Lorraine Parker -
Thursday, March 27, 2008
FRESHWATER firefighters will scale their station tower almost 1,100 times in a marathon fundraiser.
Coinciding with the Flora London Marathon, on April 13, a team of firefighters will set up their fire ladder against the station’s tower and run up and down it for the equivalent of the 26.2 miles of the London Marathon.
The team is raising money for the National Fire Service Benevolent Fund and Island causes.
The event has been organised by firefighter Mark Grimes, 27, who had hoped to take on the London event but was not picked in the ballot.
He said: “I wanted to do it for my own charity but I didn’t get through, so I came up with this and everyone agreed it was a good idea.”
He hopes to take on the New York Marathon, in November.
He said firefighters from other stations were invited to participate and it was hoped residents would go along to support them.
