APPALLING weather on Easter Sunday discouraged youngsters expected at this year’s Easter egg trail at Mottistone Manor garden.
Around 200 children earned a free Cadbury Egghead Easter egg for completing the trail.
The National Trust IW had expected between 400 and 500 children. The heavy rain and chilly conditions meant the traditional egg-and-spoon race had to be cancelled.
Heather Bradshaw, the National Trust’s assistant property manager for the Island, said: “The conditions were very wet and bitterly cold, which meant the event attracted about half the youngsters expected. It was so bad I’m surprised anybody turned up at all. The families who did turn up seemed to have a really good time and overall, the event went really well.
“We will probably run the event over the whole day next year. Later in the afternoon, after the event, the sun came out.”
Cadbury’s sponsored the Easter event for the first time, providing 500 eggs. The National Trust said it would donate the leftover eggs to an, as yet unnamed, school.
