Isle of Wight: Free bus travel cut may be avoided

Free travel cut may be avoided

By David Newble - Friday, November 21, 2008
FREE bus travel during peak hours on the Isle of Wight looks to have won a reprieve, the County Press can reveal.
Last week, Isle of Wight Council leader Cllr David Pugh told members of Gurnard Parish Council free peak-hour travel for pensioners may be scrapped because it costs too much.
However, in a report going to the council’s cabinet on Monday, it is recommended the authority continues to support the service during peak travel times (before 9.30am and after 11pm, Monday to Friday).
Cllr Pugh stressed the proposals next week were only recommendations.
He added: “At Gurnard, I raised the prospect we could not guarantee it and it was an area that was under consideration but we recognise the cost impact of before 9.30am travel is likely to be minimal.”
