HEDGELAYERS GO FOR ANCIENT HONOURS
By County Press Reporter -
Tuesday, February 18, 2003
By Lori Little THE ANCIENT art of hedgelaying will be on display at an Island farm when the 11th IW Hedgelaying Competition takes place on Saturday, February 22.
The annual event will be held at Coxes Corner, Whitecroft, from 10am to 3pm.
Matthew Chatfield, IW Council senior countryside officer, said: "Hedgerows seem like natural features of our countryside but they are made and maintained by people.
"Without its patchwork of ancient hedges the Island would be a much poorer place. Who would want huge prairie-like fields or a lot more barbed wire fences? The Island is fortunate in having landowners keen to keep alive this ancient craft and many talented hedgelayers."
Spectators can watch for free and there will be displays and hot refreshments.
The event is organised by the council's countryside section and supported by Landscape Therapy, Wight Wildlife, W. Hurst and Son, LeaderPlus and the Island's areas of natural beauty unit.
