SOMEWHERE to sit and listen to the birds, admire the flowers and watch red squirrels can be found at the new peace garden in St Lawrence.
The space was officially opened by the Island’s new high sheriff and gardening expert, Alan Titchmarsh, recently. It was blessed by the former Bishop of Worcester, the Rt Rev Peter Selby.
The garden has been created by students from the IW College and volunteers, led by St Lawrence Parochial Church Council and St Lawrence Community Association.
Springbank Nurseries are sponsoring it and provided plants and flowers. Albany Prison inmates made the seating.
Sam Twining, one of the project leaders, said: “The idea started three years ago. St Lawrence did not have a village green but we did have this piece of unconsecrated church land we could use.
“Once it was ready to be officially opened, it seemed very appropriate to ask Alan Titchmarsh to open it for us.
“We had 150 people from the village come to see it being opened, which was fantastic.”
The peace garden is in Seven Sisters Road, next to the Old Church.
