HOT AIR OVER EMISSIONS SCHEME

By Richard Wright - Monday, March 17, 2008
A NEW project to lower carbon dioxide emissions in Island towns and parishes was met with a sharp rebuke at a town council meeting.
The Lo-Co plan to promote recycling and give away low-energy lamps, water-saving devices and re-usable shopping bags, is being organised by the Footprint Trust, but not everyone is keen on the idea.
Cllr Paul Birch, told a meeting of Cowes Town Council: “I am tired of hearing this nonsense and unscientific lies. It is utter rubbish about these emissions. Most of these people don’t know the difference between carbon and carbon dioxide. We should not be lending ourselves to this nonsense.”
Cllr Willie Sanderson also described the scheme as a load of hot air. However, the council agreed to consider the plans.
Ray Harrington-Vail, general manager of the Footprint Trust, said later: “There is overwhelming scientific evidence man-made global warming is happening and we take a scientific approach to helping the environment. When you burn carbon in the form of coal or oil, you get carbon dioxide and you can reduce the amount of carbon you burn by turning off lights and appliances. That’s the message we are trying to get across.
“Unless the good councillor knows something different, we are approaching peak oil use, so we all have a vested interest in this issue. Despite his attack on science, we would still be delighted to talk to our friends in Cowes.”
