ISLANDERS were bracing themselves this afternoon (Monday) as predicted flooding began to materialise amid high winds and torrential rain.
At Newport Quay, the River Medina burst its banks, leaving Quay Arts flooded.
The cafe and shop were left under an inch of water, as was the Rope Store Gallery, from which Vicki Fong’s exhibition, Rituals, had to be temporarily moved. Life drawing classes due to be held at Quay Arts this afternoon had to be cancelled.
Staff at Quay Arts said they hoped to re-open the building tomorrow.
There was also flooding in the Rew Street and Marsh Road area of Gurnard, after seawater washed on to the road, and the Fountain pub at Cowes was reported flooded.
Flood water in Cowes was said to measure two feet deep in some areas.
Freshwater Bay was also hit by floods.
Meanwhile, the Wightlink car ferry between Yarmouth and Lymington was suspended for a time because of flooding at Yarmouth. The firm later announced a revised service because of the flooding, advising passengers concerned about their sailing to call reservations on 0871 376 10000.
The IW Council issued a statement warning people to exercise caution because of the unusually severe conditions. It advised people to use common sense and to stay away from coastal areas and any trees that might fall.
Island police also issued guidance and advice.
Coastal areas have been described as at most risk, with 85mph winds and waves causing significant danger, and flood warnings were issued for Cowes, East Cowes, Gurnard, Newport, Bembridge, Wootton and Springvale at Seaview.
Police advised people not to venture out unless their journey was completely necessary, and to call the Environment Agency’s floodline number on 0845 988 1188 if they were still concerned.
Commuters were being advised to tune into local TV and radio stations for latest travel information.
