MYSTERY CLIFFTOP MASTERPIECE
Eric Geddes’s plank circle on the beach at Compton, top, and the mystery masterpiece in the form of a Celtic spiral maze. Pictures by Peter Boam.
CIRCLES in the sand and on grass at Compton have intrigued visitors.
One is the work of a West Wight artist but who was behind the other installation remains unknown.
Waves, a circle within a circle, was the work of Eric Geddes, from Freshwater, who used 37 planks of wood from the recent flotsam to create it.
Like all his beach work, Waves was reclaimed by the sea but recorded by the Geddes’ camera.
The second, a spiral of beach stones on cliff grass, was not his work.
He said: “There are more than 1,000 stones, which have been taken quite some way.
“I reckon a whole family probably got involved to create it.”
