Isle of Wight: Calbourne Road work completed
Major road re-opens early after work
By Richard Wright -
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
THE road closure a pub landlord blamed for massive decline in his passing trade has been lifted a week early.
Calbourne Road was re-opened early thanks to crews working into the evenings, where possible, the Isle of Wight Council said.
Blacksmiths Arms landlord Simon Willis, who put up his own signs to tell people he was open for business, said his trade plummeted by 80 per cent.
IW Council director of environment and neighbourhoods Stuart Love said: “The council does make efforts to keep disruption caused by roadworks to a minimum.
“I am pleased we have been able to limit the road closure in this case and also trust road users will quickly note the benefits of the work.”
Resurfacing of Calbourne Road is part of the council’s £5 million programme and while it is now open, it this week remained controlled by traffic lights.
