Father Richard Davey

By County Press Reporter - Friday, April 25, 2008
FATHER Richard Davey, the former parish priest of St Wilfrid’s, Ventnor, has died, aged 71.
Born in Gosport, on October 6, 1936, Fr Davey was ordained in 1966 after attending a seminary in Lisbon, Portugal.
He accepted a post in Guernsey before moving to the Island in 1976, where he served the parish of St Wilfrid’s until his retirement nearly 27 years later.
A special mass of celebration held to mark his retirement was attended by more than 150 people, and included hymns and tributes from parishioners and colleagues in the Island priesthood.
Fr Davey’s incredibly long term at St Wilfrid’s meant he was well known in the local community. He helped organise the summer fete each year, and enjoyed a close relationship with St Wilfrid’s school.
After his retirement in 2003, Fr Davey spent his time gardening, walking his dog, and working on the Daily Telegraph crossword. He also enjoyed poring over his vast library of theological works.
Fr Davey’s funeral mass, which was attended by 20 fellow priests, was held at St Thomas of Canterbury RC Church, Newport, on Tuesday. Bishop Crispian Hollis presided, and the service was followed by burial at Mountjoy Cemetery.
