Lynn Christine North
By County Press Reporter -
Friday, May 2, 2008
CHRIS North, whose courageous way of dealing with her illness and impending death were featured in the County Press on April 18, has died at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.
Lynn Christine North, who was 63 three weeks ago, was born in Croydon. Her mother was born on the Island, where several generations of the family had lived. Mrs North grew up in Hampshire and Sheffield.
She worked as a nanny for the Young’s brewing family, in Scotland, before moving to Hayling Island.
She trained as a secretary before meeting husband Mike, who was a petty officer in the Royal Navy. They married in 1975, moving to Ryde in 1976.
She worked for Boynton’s bookmakers, in Ryde, taking only a few days off to have son Richard in 1977 and then worked for Ladbrokes.
Looking after a family, sometimes alone if Mike was away at sea, she also served for three years in the Royal Observer Corps, where she was a member of the Niton observer post.
Her husband left the Royal Navy in 1987 and two years later the couple sold their house in Haylands and set off on a 16,000km waterways journey through France, Belgium and Holland, teaching their son in a purpose-built classroom in their 38-tonne Dutch barge.
The family returned to Ryde in 2001, living in Dover Street. Mrs North became a member of many organisations in the area and helped with the blood donor service.
She leaves her husband, son and granddaughter, Rebecca Louise. Her daughter, Jo, died of cancer in 2001.
A funeral service will be held at the Island Crematorium, Whipp-ingham, next Friday, May 9, at 3.45pm, to which all are welcome.
A collection at the service will be divided between the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, Macmillan Nurses and the Vernon Square Preservation Society.
