Miss Jean Elizabeth Rashley

By County Press Reporter - Friday, May 9, 2008
RETIRED music teacher Jean Elizabeth Rashley died at Southampton General Hospital last Friday, aged 75.
Born at her grandparents’ farm in Niton on January 25, 1933, she was the only child of Charles and Win Rashley. Her father was a builder and funeral director in the village.

Miss Rashley, who lived in Niton all her life, was educated at Niton Primary School and at Westmont School, Newport.
A pupil of the late Kathleen Lower, a former organist at Sts Thomas Church, Newport, she left school to become a piano tutor, giving private lessons to hundreds of children at her Niton home.
Miss Rashley was employed by the IW Council as a peripatetic music teacher at the Priory Girls’ School in Newport, Niton and Hunnyhill primary schools and St Thomas of Canterbury RC School, where she taught singing and the recorder until her retirement. A diabetic for more than 35 years, Miss Rashley was a member of the IW Diabetic Association. She was also a devout member of Niton parish church and the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital, for which she volunteered her help in numerous fundraising activities.
Miss Rashley was also an avid fan of Southampton Football Club and had, for many years with her father, attended all home games as season ticket holders.
Paying tribute to Miss Rashley, her cousin, Joy Wroath, said: “Jean had suffered a variety of medical conditions but managed her complaints with courage. She had a cheerful personality and a deep affection for Niton and took a keen interest in village activities.”
She is survived by her cousin, Mrs Wroath, niece Susan Stevens, nephew David Wroath and their collective four children.
