Mr Roland `Roly` Henry Ringer

By County Press Reporter - Friday, May 9, 2008
ROLAND ‘Roly’ Henry Ringer, one of the best-known Island cricketers of his generation, has died, aged 67.
A founder member of Arreton Cricket Club 40 years ago, Mr Ringer was skipper and chairman of the club for many years and a leading run scorer.

He was also manager of the Island’s Over-50s’ side and an officer with the the Island Cricket Board.
Born in 1940, he was one of the Barton Boneheads, an old boy of Barton School.
He was apprenticed as a sheet metal worker at Saunders Roe, East Cowes, and remained with the company when it became the British Hovercraft Corporation, Westlands and then GKN, retiring after around 45 years in 2000.
He was proud to have worked on the Princess flying boat, hovercraft, Wessex helicopters and the Dash 8 fixed-wing aircraft.
He also had a brief spell at Britten Norman, working on the Islander aircraft.
His other great sporting love, apart from cricket, was bowls and he was a long-standing member of Westlands Bowls Club. He also played for the IW Community Club, the Civil Service Club and represented the Island at the game.
He also played billiards and snooker at Arreton Community Centre, where he served on the committee for more than two decades.
Mr Ringer, of Chambers Drive, Winford, leaves his wife, Julie, whom he married in 1989, and brothers Robin, Rex, George and sister Liz.
He also leaves his children, Lizbeth, Debbie and Mark, grandson David Griffiths, a seam bowler with Hampshire County Cricket Club, and granddaughters Emma, Charlotte, Sophie, Carly and Natasha.
