A LANDMARK Newport building has been saved from demolition.
The IW Council’s planning committee unanimously refused a scheme to knock down the warehouse with its distinctive gables and replace it with a two and three-storey block of flats overlooking the River Medina.

Planning officers last week recommended refusal of the plan to demolish the A. B. Cooke warehouse, at Little London, behind the Bargeman’s Rest pub.
They said the plan was out of character with the area and would result in the loss of a building that had been earmarked for retention and conversion and of benefit to the regeneration of Newport Harbour through providing employment.
Developer’s agent James Petrie said replacement of the building, which had little going for it, with homes for young people would aid regeneration.
Cllr Susan Scoccia said: “It is an important building for Newport and it would be a big loss if it was to be demolished.”
Refusing the plan, councillors said they could support a scheme that retained the facade and employment use.
