THERE was dancing in the streets of Newport on Saturday night, as costumed revellers paraded through the town to celebrate this year’s summer carnival.
The Wight Strollers won several prizes for their Flying Fokkers display, which saw members of the panto troupe don leathers, flying goggles and even aeroplane costumes to perform a routine set to Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines.
This year’s carnival queens also dazzled, with a wide range of themes including Spanish Fantasy from Newport, Queens of the Nile from Sandown and Cowes, Flower Fairies from St Helens, Ice Maidens from Ventnor, Grecian Warrior Princesses from Shanklin and Fairytale Princesses from Freshwater and Totland.
Scores of youngsters from five Newport schools combined their talents to create one of the most stunning spectacles of the evening — a huge display inspired by weird science and the South American rainforest.
Young revellers from Nine Acres Primary and Downside Middle dressed as rainforest creatures, while Summerfields Primary pupils donned Chilean penguin outfits and children from Archbishop King Middle School used silver and rainbow-coloured costumes to represent refracted light.
The entry was co-ordinated by Medina High, who led the youngsters with Taheebo, a giant shaman created and operated by 14-year-old student Kyle Huges.
Other eye-catching entries included Shrek and Princess Fiona from PJs School of Dance and youngsters dressed as Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan characters also raised a smile.
Led by the Wight Diamonds Marching Band, the parade also featured Darth Vader from Star Wars, along with his gang of Stormtroopers.
In the children's carnival earlier in the day, youngsters dressed as characters from the colourful musical, The Wizard of Oz, followed the yellow brick road to victory.
