TEACHERS SET TO WALK OUT OVER PAY DISPUTE
By Clare Wall -
Thursday, April 3, 2008
APPROXIMATELY a third of Island teachers are being encouraged to join the picket line with National Union of Teachers (NUT) later this month.
NUT members across the country voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking industrial action on Thursday, April 24, in a row over pay increases. The government has determined a pay deal over three years, with the 2008 pay rise being 2.45 per cent, below the current rate of inflation at 4.1 per cent. John McGee, secretary of the Island branch of the NUT, said: “This comes after years of below-inflation pay rises. Putting it mildly, this is the straw that has broken the camel’s back.”
David Porter, speaking on behalf of the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers, said its members had been told not to cover any shifts missed by NUT members out on strike. He said: “We are showing absolute solidarity.”
