Isle of Wight: Newport flats plan

Town centre flats approved

By Martin Neville - Tuesday, July 22, 2008
CONDITIONAL approval has been given to an application to demolish a Newport decorating shop and replace it with a retail unit and 12 two-bedroom flats.
Planning committee members today (Tuesday) agreed with their officers' recommendation for the scheme, on the corner of Chain Lane and Lugley Street, despite concerns about overdevelopment and insufficient parking on the Days Colour Centre site.
Fourteen letters of objection were received from members of the public, while Southern Water said there was inadequate capacity in the network to provide foul sewage disposal for the proposed development.
Newport Town Management Committee also objected to the plans, as members felt the proposals were not in keeping with the street scene.
At this afternoon's meeting, one objector described the plan as a "quick buck scheme" by a mainland developer and said it would tower over neighbouring buildings and take away light from properties in Chain Lane.
