Isle of Wight: Brading Eco Loos vandalism
VANDALS RAMPAGE AT NEW ECO TOILETS
By Ross Findon -
Thursday, July 3, 2008
Damage at the new Eco Loos at Brading car park.
A £110,000 toilet block featuring local artwork and eco-techology has been vandalised within days of opening.
The Eco Loos at Brading car park, a joint project by the Isle of Wight Council and Brading Town Council, were opened last week and yesterday (Wednesday) morning it was discovered they had been badly damaged.
The Isle of Wight Council has pledged to continue its programme of building similar facilities and has condemned the vandalism.
Despite being constructed from vandal-resistant materials, it is thought a hammer or sledgehammer might have been used to cause the damage, which it is thought will cost thousands of pounds to repair.
Police Sgt Rick Davidson described the attack as mindless vandalism and said the culprits had no respect for the town.
“The Safer Neighbourhoods team are seeking information, particularly anyone who saw a vehicle being driven away from the area towards Ryde at around half past midnight on Wednesday,” he said.
He appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact PC Mark Vincent at Shanklin Police Station on 0845 045 45.
The male section of the toilets will be closed for several days for repairs.
