WIGHT IS GOING GREEN

By Ross Findon - Wednesday, February 20, 2008
UNANIMOUS backing was given to the IW Council’s Eco Island vision by members of the Cabinet yesterday (Tuesday).
The plan outlines a host of proposals for tackling pollution, developing green energy and improving training and skills on the Island.
“The key word in this document is do. It’s all well and good having a vision but action is the key,” said Cllr George Brown, deputy council leader and cabinet member for economy, planning and property.
The council hopes the strategy will lead to greater investment on the Island, including cash from academic organisations that may use the Island as a test site for research into areas such as renewable energy.
They plan to launch the strategy at an Eco Island conference, due to be held at Cowes Yacht Haven on March 26, when businesses will be encouraged to go green.
A three-day community event, the Big Green Picnic, is also planned for May to show the public how they can get involved.
The council itself has already begun tests into electric cars to use in its fleet and will make annual commitments to new efforts for sustainability each year.
Cllr Barry Abraham said: “It will be nice to see some of these ideas coming to fruition.”
