SAFETY FIRST DURING SKANDIA COWES WEEK FIREWORKS

By Martin Neville - Friday, August 10, 2007
TONIGHT, Skandia Cowes Week hosts its traditional fireworks display, an annual event that attracts thousands of additional visitors to Cowes and the surrounding area.
The hot weather encourages people to come out and have fun and Cowes is a great place for an evening out.
However, those who own powerful craft should take extra care, particularly with so many boats coming in and out of the harbour.
Stuart McIntosh, the Cowes Harbour Master, said: “People should take the same care and show the same consideration as they would if they were driving their car especially in RIBS and high powered craft.
“Skippers are responsible for the safety of their crews and basic measures, such as ensuring all passengers have life jackets or buoyancy aids, and respecting the speed restrictions, are essential and will help to ensure the well being of all those on board."
An additional safety measure has been implemented for the firework display by Associated British Ports Southampton and Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth, with a temporary speed restriction in place within the central Solent of 15 knots from 9.30pm until midnight.
