YOUNG Island cricketers got their chance to shine in an all-girls regional tournament, in Newbury.
The IW Schools Girls under-15 team won all three group games in the Lady Taverners Regional Indoor Tournament but were eventually knocked out by a team from Cornwall.
Eight Island girls took part in the one-day event, which saw them bowl and field superbly in their first game against Chesham High, of Buckinghamshire.
The IW finished on 56-0 off six overs, with the highlight of the game, bowler Megan Corbin’s one run over.
The team’s batting was steady and in the fourth over Georgia Dye and Rachael Mew produced 21 runs. The Island team eventually won by ten runs.
The second game, against Castle, from Somerset, proved to be an easier task and the Islanders batted and bowled well. Georgia claimed a hat-trick in the first over, reducing them to 4–3. Alex Barton also had an excellent game and after two overs had taken four wickets for 12 runs. Castle were 38 all out in seven overs. The IW won by 55 runs.
The final game against Hardenhuish, from Wiltshire, allowed the IW team to claim another easy victory. The IW scored 64–0 off 6 overs, Georgia retiring on 20, Rachael retiring on 22. In an exceptional performance, Hardenhuish were restricted to 29 for 7 wickets, leading the Island to a 56-run win.
The match against Corn-wall side Mounts Bay proved to be a tougher task. The confidence built up in an impressive bowling session in which Mounts Bay were restricted to 37–4 was soon shattered when Georgia Dye was bowled out first ball.
The IW regularly lost wickets throughout the six overs, finishing on 26–6. Mounts Bay won by 17 runs.
Team: Georgia Dye (captain), Rachael Mew, Alex Barton, Deanna Childs, Megan Corbin, Heather MacDonald, Nicole Mew and Jessica Attrill.
