RINGER SMASHES CENTURY AS GKN OPEN IN STYLE
Friday, May 9, 2008
Sport/Cricket
GKN and Northwood made winning starts to their Harwoods Renault IW Division One season, with resounding wins over Plessey and Whitecroft respectively.
However, three other matches were postponed — Ryde Cavaliers v Shanklin was cancelled, Westover v West Island was off due to a waterlogged pitch and the St Helens v Newport game was not played because St Helens’s pitch was deemed unfit.
Darren Ringer’s astounding 101 not out helped GKN to a 116-run win away to Plessey.
His innings was the highlight of an otherwise low-scoring game, where GKN’s M. Cocks scored 49 before being caught lbw by George Hatt. GKN totalled 264-4 from their overs and Plessey’s best bowling came from the economic G. Anthill, who registered two wickets for 17 runs off his nine overs.
In reply, Plessey’s batsmen were reduced to 148-8, their batsmen unable to surpass the 40-run mark. Kevin Hatt came closest on 36, with A. Flood close behind on 33.
Jack Bartlett was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 38 runs off nine overs, including three maidens. Pete England registered 2-23, and D. Serter had 2-25.
Meanwhile, general all-round good batting from Northwood helped them to a staggering 193-run win over Whitecroft, who were skittled for just 53.
All but two of Northwood’s batsmen scored double figures, with Simon Goldsmith scoring 46 and Steve Allwood scoring 36.
Northwood were dismissed for 246, W. Chamire, Marc Younghusband and Andy Potts all getting two wickets and M. Fuller gaining three.
Allwood had the best of the bowling for Northwood, and for the day, grabbing six wickets for just 32 runs off eight overs. R. Laing picked up the remaining four Whitecroft wickets at the expense of just 21 runs of his nine overs. Top scorer for Whitecroft was Duncan Jupe with 15.
