DIAMOND DAY FOR ICE STARS
Friday, January 18, 2008
The triumphant Wight Diamonds team proudly show off their medals and trophy following their success in becoming British novice champions for 2008.
Sport/Ice skating
WIGHT Diamonds synchronised skating team saw their dreams come true on Saturday in Sheffield when they were crowned 2008 British novice champions.
The Wightlink-sponsored Diamonds were competing for the first time under the International Judging System (IJS). They faced two more experienced teams, both of which are fortunate to train on full-sized ice pads.
Part of the Diamonds’ preparation included travelling to Planet Ice, Basingstoke, to lay out their programme on a larger ice surface than is available at Ryde.
The ability to make use of the whole area of the ice is important to score well under the IJS.
Overall, the Island won with 31.75 points, followed by NIC Shadows with 29.14 and Bracknell Fusion on 28.31. A five-point advantage in the scores for technical elements helped the Diamonds clinch the title.
The Island team was Demi Agar, Yelena Brown, Lucy Burns, Sarah Close, Isabelle Coeshott, Sabrina Danzig, Gemma Fishel, Leah Hancott, Nicole Hinton, Heather MacDonald, Gemma Marsh, Charlotte Mennie, Kate Nutbourne, Maggie Read, Zoe Southwell, Rhian Teasdale, Emma Wilks, Phoena Wilmott-Bayer and Louisa Wrighton.
“It was great to see all the hard work and dedication pay off,” said Terri Smith, head coach at Planet Ice.
“We decided last summer to take on the challenge to compete at IJS this year to improve the standard of synchro on the IW, not for one minute thinking we would win.
“The girls represented the Island in style and were a credit to be with. They have done themselves and the club proud.
“The juvenile and intermediate synchro teams compete in their championships on March 24. Let’s hope they can follow in the Diamonds’ footsteps and bring home more medals and trophies.”
