BASEMENT BATTLE HAS CUP-TIE ATMOSPHERE

Friday, April 25, 2008
IN a physical match with a cup-tie atmosphere, Slough took all three points to keep their survival hopes alive.
Newport made a dream start, taking the lead after only four minutes.
Darren Powell weaved through the defence before slipping the ball out to Mark LILLEY, whose low shot beat the oncoming keeper to go into the corner of the net.
Slough quickly counter-attacked, pressing for an equaliser, which finally came on 31 minutes when a cross from John Gray was turned in from close range by Terry Davies.
Just before half time Mark Isaacson was booked for a late tackle.
The Port started the second half defending and Jason Mann deflected wide a goalbound shot from John Gray.
Desperate for the three points, Slough replaced midfielder Danny Jefferies with Anguillan international and striker Jermaine Gumbs.
On 67 minutes came a pivotal moment in the match when scorer Mark Lilley was upended by keeper Jamie Jackson. However, referee Mark Pottage deemed Lilley had dived and showed him a yellow card. A minute later Mark Lilley appeared to be elbowed and after remonstrating with an assistant referee was given a second yellow, and duly sent off.
With ten minutes remaining, Slough took the lead when Gumbs raced down the right to the by line before dragging the ball back for Terry Davies to blast the ball into the roof of the net.
The win was completed in the 89th minute.
