DEPLETED BRADING HOLD FOURTH-PLACED POOLE

By Clare Wall - Saturday, April 19, 2008
Brading Town registered an impressive 1-1 draw with high-fliers Poole Town in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier League at home today (Saturday).
The side, with several players through injury and unavailability took the lead after 15 minutes through a header by impressive 17-year-old Scott Jones.
But Poole, who are in the top echelons of the league, levelled after half an hour, and despite Brading dominating the second half, Poole left with a point.
Manager Phil Moore said Poole were fortunate. "The boys played brilliantly and more than deserved a draw, in fact Poole were lucky to be going home with a point."
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Cowes Sports let a 2-0 lead slip in the final ten minutes of their game at home to Horndean, drawing 2-2.
An own goal put Cowes ahead, before Tom Scovell's 18-yard screamer put the home side comfortably in the lead. But two goals in the dying moments from Horndean denied them a win.
It means Cowes are likely to remain in eighth spot.
In the Sydenhams Wessex League, Division One, East Cowes Vics travelled to Andover New Street and won 1-0, though according to manager Lee Dixon it should have been more.
"We dominated the game save for putting the ball in the back of the net," he said. "Our finishing let us down, but we were all over them."
Vics' goal came from Kurt Butt after 30 minutes.
The only action in the second half came when Simon Williams was ejected for using the elbow, while an Andover defender was sent off later for pulling down a Vics attacking player.
In the Southern League, South and West division, Slough travelled to Newport determined to pull themselves out of the relegation battle, and did themselves plenty of favours by beating the Port 3-1.
Newport took an early lead through Mark Lilley, but Slough equalised shortly before the break and, when Lilley was sent off for a second bookable offence early in the second half, Slough pulled away.
Derek Ohren said: "It was pretty disappointing, there really wasn't much between the two sides, but Slough had that extra impetus to pull themselves away from relegation."
