FIVE-YEAR BAN FOR SPARTAN

By Lorraine Parker - Friday, March 28, 2008
RED Star Spartans’ Leon Day has been banned from football for five years by Hampshire FA.
Day and his team mates attended a hearing yesterday (Thursday) after their Hampshire Cup semi-final match against Liphook was abandoned, at the beginning of the month, when Day was alleged to have pushed referee Chris Beech.

Six players were sent off and Red Star have now been kicked out of the competition and fined £50.
Thirty-year-old Day, who has been playing football since he was nine and vehemently denied pushing the referee, has also been fined £250 and was said to be “gutted” at the decision.
Earlier this week, player/manager Danny Case, Michael Hayward, Brendan O’Brien and Sean Tiltman were also banned but some plan to appeal against the FA’s penalties.
Case received a 21-day suspension for serious foul play, while the others each received 35-day bans for abusing the referee.
Oakfield’s John Taylor also had his hearing yesterday following an alleged assault on referee Dennis Fothergill in a league match against East Cowes Vics Reserves on the same day.
Taylor, 37, was banned for 180 days and fined £150 for pushing the referee.
Oakfield secretary Geoff Ruck said: “Hampshire FA recognised there was no case to answer with regard to actual bodily harm and opted for the minimum punishment they could impose.
“The club is very happy with the outcome. We now want to get back to playing football.”
