FRESH BLOW TO TROUBLED CLUB

By Clare Wall - Friday, May 16, 2008
AFTER one of the worst seasons in their history, Newport Football Club’s chairman Glenda Bull, and her director husband, Roger, have resigned from the club.
The couple, who have supported the club for around 50 years, made their decision this week.
Glenda said: “We were not getting support from other members of the club or the board. It was a hard decision. We’ve been supporting the club for 50-odd years, we wanted the club to succeed but we felt other members did not feel the same way as we did.”
Paul Phelps will become acting chairman with Alan Spring, Bob Ford and Mike West remaining as directors.
A statement by the directors on Wednesday said: “We are grateful for the contribution made by Glenda and Roger. We recognise that without them this club may not have made it through one of the most difficult periods in its history. We hope we will see them back and contributing actively to the life of the club in the near future.”
Whether more directors are needed will be decided at a Supporters’ Trust EGM next month.
Newport endured a hard season in the Southern League, South and West Division, rooted to the bottom with just two wins and five draws in 42 games. They conceded 143 goals and scored only 25.
They have now been relegated to the Sydenhams Wessex League, Premier Division, joining Cowes Sports and Brading.
Manager Derek Ohren has already made steps to make the side more competitive, making five signings.
Iain Seabrook and Alex Przepoleski, from Shanklin, and Ross Gregory, Sam Dye and Richard Sprooles, from Brading, have all put pen to paper.
Ohren said: “I am really looking forward to the new season in the Wessex League.”
