LITTLE JOY FOR TOP ISLAND SIDES
By Lorraine Parker -
Saturday, March 15, 2008
THE Island's top teams failed to muster a win between them in this weekend's matches.
East Cowes Vics and Cowes Sports were both held to draws while Newport suffered a defeat and Brading had their clash postponed.
Vics dug deep in their six-goal thriller away at Liss Athletic in the Sydenhams Wessex League, Division 1.
Having taken the lead after 20 minutes with a Harry Ovnik volley, Vics sat back and allowed the home team to equalise moments later.
A bizarre goalkeeping mishap allowed Tom McInnes to put Vics up 2-1 at the break but yet again the home team replied quickly when Vics failed to clear their lines.
Just one minute after half time Vics found themselves 3-2 down, after conceding two in 60 seconds, one of which was a penalty.
Vics managed to pull it back to 3-3 with a Joshua Appell goal and had more chances but failed to secure the victory.
Manager Lee Dixon said: "I think it was a fair result at the end of the day. We got a point away from home and I'm pretty pleased with that."
Meanwhile in the Premier Division, on Friday night, Cowes Sports held VTFC to a 2-2 draw. Vosper Thornycroft lost the lead twice having scored first in both halves.
Scoring in reply in the first half was Joe Rayner and when VTFC had their goalkeeper sent off in the second half, Cowes' James Butt took full advantage.
Newport also suffered a 1-0 defeat at home in the Southern League, South and West Division, to AFC Hayes in a tightly fought-out game.
Newport created some good chances and even had a goal disallowed but it was a 48th minute goal by AFC Hayes that secured the win.
The wet weather made it difficult to control the ball and neither team really dominated but Hayes managed to stifle Newport's attacks.
Their best chance came with just under half an hour to go when Jamie White's free kick on the edge of the penalty area was deflected for a corner.
This was met by Dave Lewis, but his header was tipped over the bar.
