Newport`s happy away days

By Matt White - Saturday, November 29, 2008
All four of the Island’s senior teams played on the mainland this week end but only one side returned with three points.
In the Sydenhams Wessex League, Premier Division, Newport made it three away wins on the trot with a 3-1 victory over Alresford Town.
The visitors controlled the first half and deservedly led after two goals from Tom McInnes and a tap-in by Charlie Smeeton.
The hosts responded with a goal after the break but Newport stood firm to gain all three points.
Brading Town were beaten 6-1 by Hayling United, although the game proved very eventful for debutant Darren Williams.
After coming on as a substitute in his first appearance for the first team, Williams scored before he was shown a red card, rounding off a bad afternoon for the visitors.
Cowes Sports travelled to Fareham Town but were told on arrival the game had been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
In Division 1, East Cowes Vics were unlucky to return home with nothing after losing 1-0 to Shaftesbury.
The Island side had some great opportunities to score but a combination of missed chances and good goalkeeping meant they couldn’t find a way past the home side’s rearguard.
