SEVENTH HEAVEN FOR COWES BUT DISAPPOINTMENT FOR OTHER ISLAND SIDES
By Clare Wall -
Saturday, March 8, 2008
Cowes Sports were in seventh heaven on Saturday when they put seven goals past bottom-placed Downton in the Sydenhams Wessex League, Premier Division.
The side were expecting a win against Downton and certainly made sure there was space between themselves by making it 3-0 by half time.
Goals were from Chris Elliott and a brace from Matt Evans.
Evans scored his hat-trick goal after the break, and further markers from Adam Barsdell, Tom Scovell and Simon Butler ensured the rout.
Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Brading suffered at the hands of experienced VT FC 5-0 at Vicarage Lane.
Playing down the slope for the first half, Brading were 2-0 down by half-time, with the second half a more daunting task. Their woes continued when centre-back Ollie Fleming suffered a hamstring injury which is likely to sideline him for a good few weeks.
Manager Phil Moore said: "We are naturally all very disappointed but we have to pick ourselves up ready for Tuesday's match against Horndean."
In the Sydenhams Wessex League, Division One, East Cowes Vics played out a frustrating 1-1 draw with Hythe and Dibden.
Vics created all the chances and went 1-0 up after 22 minutes with an opportunist goal from Kurt Butt. But their lack of finishing power, plus a soft 30-yard shot deflected past Vics' goalie Ollie Fulljames on 58 minutes, ensured the draw.
Newport's clash away against top-of-the-table Didcot Town in the Southern League, South and West Division, ended 5-0 to Didcot.
The turning point of the game came when Newport's Nathan Bailey was sent off after 35 minutes.
