WEATHER ADDS MISERY FOR SENIOR SIDES
By Lorraine Parker -
Saturday, March 22, 2008
IN BLUSTERY, wet and windy conditions the Island's top teams had a mixed day away (Saturday) with Brading the only team to secure a win.
The other Sydenhams Wessex League, Premier Division, match between Romsey Town and Cowes Sports was postponed because of the weather while both Newport and East Cowes Vics suffered defeats in their away clashes.
Brading battled hard to return home with all three points in their match at Hayling United with a 1-0 win.
The weather made for a scrappy match between the teams but Brading came the closest with several near misses. Dave Greening had a handful of difficult opportunities while James Temple headed just wide. But Brading reaped the rewards in the 55th minute when Danny Hatcher scored.
Meanwhile in the Southern League, South and West Division, Newport were on the receiving end of an 8-1 drubbing in their away match at Godalming Town.
In atrocious conditions and on a poor pitch, Newport found themselves 5-0 down at half time.
Newport, who had a number of senior players unavailable, conceded another after half time but got a consolation goal through Richard Morse to make it 6-1, before Godalming scored two more.
Manager Derek Ohren said: "It was a case of men against boys and we came second best. It was a very bad day at the office, that's all I can say."
In the Sydenhams Wessex League, Division 1, East Cowes Vics lost 2-0 away at Stockbridge in a match heavily affected by the weather and refereeing decisions.
Having dominated the first 20 minutes, Vics were disheartened to find themselves 1-0 down after giving the ball away cheaply.
Vics desperately tried to chase the game in the second half but never really got hold of the ball and misplaced too many passes.
Vics were again hit on the break with ten minutes to go when Stockbridge scored another to seal the win.
Manager Lee Dixon said: "The weather was a key factor in this game, At one point we were playing in snow. It was a very difficult match and the refereeing was atrocious for both sides. That and the weather ruined a good game."
