COUNTY CHAMPIONS AT FIRST TRY
Friday, April 25, 2008
JUST six months after their formation, the Vectis under-14s girls hockey team have been crowned champions of the Hampshire Women’s under-14 league, division one.
Despite still having three matches in hand, the league table shows the IW team at 21 points from seven games, with their nearest rival, Havant, on 15 points, having played all ten of their matches.
On Sunday, the girls joined with family and friends at the Melbourne Ardenlea Hotel, Shanklin, for the end-of season party and trophy presentation to mark the occasion.
All members of the team were presented with a personalised silver trophy and centre-forward, Lauren Mursell, walked away with the top goal-scorer award.
Coach Jon Milton said: “It has been an amazing year for the girls. They have worked hard during the weekly training sessions and this is becoming more evident with every passing week.
“Their individual skill as hockey players continues to improve and their ability to play as a team has made all the difference. Quick and accurate passing, good build-up and tremendous work in front of goal has meant the other teams have had their hands full.”
It was also announced by team manager Koo Janzen the team would be entered into the Hampshire under-16 league next season.
This will enable a few of the girls, who would now be too old to play in the under-14 league, to continue playing.
“The girls need a bigger challenge for next year,” he said. “They are now ready to play hockey at a higher level and the under-16 league will provide them with that, as well as giving them more matches to play due to a greater number of teams in the division”.
The Vectis Juniors thank their sponsors as well as Chichester and Hampshire coach and player, Martin Hughes, who travelled as their umpire.
