Sport/Hockey
BUDDING hockey players, spectators and fans of the sport are welcome to attend this weekend’s annual Isle of Wight Hockey Festival.
The IW Hockey Club will be holding their annual event tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday at Victoria Recreation Ground, Newport.
More than 30 teams from across the country, including Scotland and Ireland, will be taking part in the popular event that has a fun theme for all ages.
It’s a great opportunity for any players or parents to come along and meet players from the IW Hockey Club.
There’s also a hockey equipment shop on site giving great deals and offers.
The weekend features numerous games for men’s, ladies, juniors and mixed teams.
The theme is very much fun-based with most of the teams turning up in fancy dress ranging from superheroes to model aeroplanes. There’s also activities and entertainment off the pitch and a licensed bar and food stalls.
Many of the teams will be staying at the Sandown Bay Holiday Camp and admission for spectators is free. If you are interested in playing hockey or taking up the game again, come along and make yourself known.
During the season, the Island men and women play league matches and the men also have a colts’ section. In season, coaching is provided by South African international Craig Peel.
More details about the festival and the sport on the Island are available via the club’s website,www.iowhockey.co.uk
The club are unable to take any more teams this year but if you are interested in entering a work or school team for next year, or want to go along and play hockey, contact Alison Austin on 741409 or e-mail toalisona@aol.com
