VECTIS KEEP WINNING RUN GOING
Friday, February 1, 2008
Sport/Hockey
Vectis 5, Romsey 2
AFTER winning two consecutive games, Vectis had a lot to live up to and maintain that run.
The game started badly with Romsey managing to fumble a goal after three attempts were saved right on the goal line.
Vectis soon replied with the partnership of Burford and Morton creating an opening, which the latter hit a reverse shot into the goal.
Just before half-time, the attacking partnership got themselves in the same situation, which, this time, Burford slipped the ball past the goalkeeper to put Vectis in front.
The defence had little to trouble them in the second half and Romsey only managed to push in another goalmouth scramble, which fell to their player after Caddick had made two vital saves.
The attack pressured the Romsey defence relentlessly and Burford scored again. This was soon followed by a well-placed push shot from Burrows that found its way under a sliding keeper.
The Romsey keeper, injured from this attack, went off to be replaced by an outfield player.
In the last five minutes, Vectis achieved four short corners, two long corners and a penalty flick, which they conceded to change to a short corner because of the lack of goalkeeper. All of these attacks were ferociously defended against and Vectis could not increase their lead.
Players of the match were Scott and Stuart, for the second game running.
Vectis: Gwa Barton, Burdett, Burford, Burrows, Caddick, Morton, Richardson, Scott, Shirley, Stuart, Williams.
SCOPE FOR BETTER THINGS BY ISLAND
IW II 4, US Portsmouth II 1
The IW remain top of the Hampshire Open League, Division 4, but know they must improve vastly tomorrow (Satur-day) if they are to take anything off second place Bournemouth.
Despite the scoreline looking comparatively large, the game was anything but comfortable for the Island. They only had themselves to blame, as US Portsmouth, who are second bottom, belied their lowly league position and looked like a side fighting for their league status who should be nearer the top.
The first goal would be crucial and it fell to the Island after 15 minutes. A pass from Felix Stubbings found Simon Butler, who was taken out by a defender as he rounded the keeper. A penalty flick was awarded, which was converted by Alan Ball.
But any hopes of the IW pulling away were dashed when Portsmouth deservedly equalised from a short corner routine before half-time.
Nerves were settled when Ball smashed home the Island’s second from a penalty corner. This became three soon after when Ball picked up a rebound and smashed home his and the Island’s third.
The fourth goal came close to full time when Felix Stubbings beat three defenders and squeezed the ball home in off the goalkeeper’s near post.
The Island know they will need a major improvement if they are to leave Bourne-mouth tomorrow with any points.
