VECTIS MAKE OPPORTUNITIES COUNT IN LEAGUE
Friday, January 18, 2008
Sport/Hockey
Vectis 3, Portsmouth 0
FOR the second week running Vectis made the most of their chances.
The first half was mostly dominated by an attacking Vectis, who went one goal ahead in the first five minutes.
Burford’s original shot rebounded back to her, which she then put past the keeper.
The prolific goalscorer then followed this with another in 20 minutes. Portsmouth did find a few breaks in the defence forcing short corners.
One of these was deflected around the post brilliantly by a diving Caddick.
The third goal came from a well worked passing play, which saw Burrows score with a devious bouncing shot.
Players of the match were Caddick and Stewart.
Vectis: Burdett, Burford, Burrows, Caddick, Frazer, Knowlson, F. Morton, L. Morton, Richardson, Scott, Shirley, Stewart, Williams.
Lavant 0, IW II 0
The Island were knocked off the top spot in the Hampshire Open League for the first time this season as they were held to a frustrating draw at Lavant.
For the second game running, the IW had all the possession and chances but could not convert these into goals and met an in-form keeper and a tight defence.
Lavant did not register a single shot on the Island goal.
Despite not playing for several weeks, due to the winter break, the IW still looked sharp and created the first real chance but Craig Bruce’s effort was saved by the keeper, a sight that would become all too familiar for the Island’s players.
Alan Ball, Simon Butler and Ed Rollason also went close but a 0-0 half time score always looked like it would remain the same at full time.
The closest they came in the second half was when Butler’s shot from a short corner was destined for the bottom corner, only for the keeper to produce a stunning diving save with his stick.
John Pearson, Ball and Bruce continued to test the home defence but it was simply not to be.
Tomorrow (Saturday), the Island host fourth place Petersfield while leaders Bournemouth play third-place Aldershot.
