IW Lightning 3, Lee Valley Lions 3
UNBEATEN IW Lightning, the Island under-14 ice hockey side, are one win away from being crowned league champions after this draw with fellow high-flyers Lee Valley.
As in previous games the first period started at a frantic pace, but Oliver Finch settled the nerves with a thunderbolt which left the Lee Valley netminder without a chance but Lee Valley took the second period with two unanswered goals to leave the match on a knife-edge going into the final period.
It was the first time this season the Lightning had been behind and the character of the players was about to be tested.
And, with just two minutes remaining of the match the score remained the same, but a goal from man of the match Aidan Doughty lifted the team and the crowd. With a minute remaining, netminder Elliott Powell was pulled from the goal to give the Lightning an extra skater and the move paid off when with 31 seconds left Doughty scored the equaliser.
The draw means Lightning face their last game away against Cardiff on April 27, with the winner crowned league champions.
