DISASTROUS THIRD PERIOD FOR RAIDERS

PETERBOROUGH Phantoms put the spooks into Wightlink Raiders last weekend, stunning the Island side with a third period barrage to win 10-3.
The Raiders’ only game of the weekend looked to be going well when, by the end of the second period, they were only 4-3 down to the home side.
But Phantoms came out all guns blazing in the final session and peppered Wightlink goalie Toby Cooley with an incredible 32 shots in the third period, scoring six times.
The game began well for Phantoms, taking the lead through captain Lewis Buckman after only seven minutes, while on a powerplay.
But the lead was shortlived when Geoff O’Hara netted from Michael Hargreaves’ and Richard Wojciak’s assists. James Morgan put the Phantoms into a narrow lead before the break.
However the Raiders continued to nip at their heels, Robert Franc scoring at 21.42 from Danny Hughes and Juraj Rusic to level.
And the Raiders were soon in the lead when the same trio combined again, with Hughes the scorer.
Sadly though that was to be the last the Raiders would celebrate as Phantoms pulled back and then took the lead to go into the third period 4-3 up.
The final period will be one the Raiders will want to forget, pinned into their own zone as Phantoms piled on attack after attack.
Coach Gareth Endicott said: “It wasn’t good, they scored a couple of quick goals and then it was backs to the wall for the rest of the game, there was only going to be one winner.
“We have to learn to play with the right mentality to get us through the whole game, we have to play 60 minutes, not 40. At the moment we are just switching off.”
Phantoms’ Nathan Rempel and Maris Ziedins scored two each, while Buckman completed his hat-trick and Joe Miller added to the agony.
This weekend the Raiders play host to Chelmsford Chieftains. Face off at Planet Ice on Saturday is 6pm.
Following the match in the Raiders Bar, there will be shirt auction of all the away jerseys.
