Ice Hockey: Three defenders signed

Defence trio completes line-up

By Clare Wall - Wednesday, July 23, 2008
THREE young British defencemen have joined Wightlink Raiders' ranks, to virtually complete the new-look ice hockey side.
Re-signing for the Raiders for his third full season with the club is Will Francis, while two newcomers, Luke Reynolds and Yousif Abu Saada, have also put pen to paper for the forthcoming campaign.
Abu Saada, 21, is a product of Swindon’s junior development programme and last year divided his season between Raiders rivals Swindon Wildcats and the club’s lower league side.
Reynolds spent last season at Chelmsford Chieftains and has previous experience with Romford Raiders, Bracknell Bees and Basingstoke Bison.
Player-coach Gareth Endicott said the trio would bolster the side’s defence.
“Will, Yousif and Luke are all relishing the opportunity to compete for the final spots in our defensive units,” he said.
“Having played with Yousif, I know he is a good lad looking to make an impression.
“Luke is a solid defenceman, who is looking again to prove himself at this level. He is keen to come in and compete for a spot, which is great for the team.
“Will also feels the competition for a spot is positive for the team’s performance.”
“Right now I see Janne Saarenpaa, Shawn Mole, Dan Scott and Damon Larter as my top four defencemen. However, these guys will be pushing for spots, while also providing great cover for the team."
These latest signings bring the squad’s roster up to 18.
