Friday, February 22, 2008
Sport/Ice Hockey
IW Lightning 5, Cardiff Devils 4
BOTH under-14 teams went into the game unbeaten on Sunday and knowing the final result would have a huge impact on the end of season league positions.
The first period was full of exciting, skilful hockey with the visitors on the scoresheet first. However, as in previous games, this stirred Lightning, who replied with a goal from spirit of the game George Taylor.
Man of the match and netminder Elliott Powell faced wave after wave of Cardiff firepower in the second period but goals from Aidan Doughty and Taylor gave them a slender 3-2 lead.
In the final period, two further goals from Taylor, assisted by Denness, sawthe Lightning hold on for a famous win to stay four points clear at the top of the league.
Bristol 2, IW Lightning 15
The Lightning travelled to Bristol and again showed why they are top of the league with another classy performance against a team who were hoping to impress on home ice.
As in most games this season, the Lightning only just had enough players to field a team but were determined to prove to their opposition that what they lack in numbers they more than make up in class.
Archie Bicknell got the show on the road by scoring an early goal and further first period strikes were added by Aidan Doughty, man of the match George Taylor and Joseph Denness to end the period with a commanding 4-0 lead.
The second period was close but Lightning produced two further goals from Denness and Taylor to hold a 6-1 advantage.
Entering the third period, Lightning came out all guns blazing. Four goals were added by Doughty, Denness, 3, Taylor and Oliver Finch to end the game with a great winning margin.
Spirit of the game went to Connor Price.
