RAIDERS END HOME RUN ON A HIGH

By Clare Wall - Sunday, March 9, 2008
WIGHTLINK Raiders put a magnificent seven past Swindon Wildcats for their final home game of the season on Sunday (9), beating their Wiltshire counterparts 7-2.
In a fitting end to the campaign, which has often been beset with agonising defeat, the Raiders put on a fine show for the 698-strong crowd.
Three goals came in quick succession in the first period to put the Raiders comfortably in front. Two from man of the match Nicky Watt and a third from Jason Coles sent the crowd wild.
A single Swindon goal marked a quiet middle period, before the game exploded into life in the final 20 minutes.
Top quality hockey from the Raiders was rewarded with some top quality goals, not least from Coles who sealed his hat-trick with a couple of peachy scores.
Slovakians Juraj Rusic and Robert Franc both scored sweet goals, assisting one another along with Danny Hughes in a red-hot attacking line.
Toby Cooley, who ably manned the goal once again, thwarting many good Swindon chances, was named player of the month for February.
This weekend the Raiders play their final games of the season, an away double-header against Sheffield Scimitars.
